Universal Music is selling a large chunk of its catalog DRM-free. This will be tested out until Janurary to see how things go. Unprotected songs will be priced at $1.29 instead of the standard 99 cents.
This means that another major music company is offering content to be played across platforms, without copy protection software. Both albums and songs will be available for sale, withouth DRM, at RealNetworks, Wal-Mart, Amazon and Google. Surpisingly enough, iTunes was not involved in the deal. This is probably because Universal decided not to renew its long-term retail contract with iTunes, and Universal’s own Eminem is currently suing Apple for copyright infringement. With EMI having already offered its content DRM-free through iTunes, perhaps Universal will change its mind if the test run for DRM-free sales go well with the other networks
